When should you replace your helmet?

In this week’s blog post we are going to speak about one of the protection essentials – helmets. It can sound vulgar but helmets are really important, they can save you from irreversible injuries. Make sure you wear a helmet at all times when using your e-scooter or e-bike.

One of our most common questions is “When should I replace my helmet?” and there are so many answers to this question. Let’s start by explaining how helmets work and how they are made.

Helmets were designed to project to absorb and disperse energy. Most helmets are made of EPS foam. This foam when hit dissipates energy across the whole helmet. That’s why it is so important to make sure that you are using a helmet all time when riding scooters or bikes. In case of an accident, you reduce your chances by 80% to develop a brain injury.

And when should you replace your helmet?

Usually, helmets last for five years. But there are many cases when you should change your helmet. If you drop your helmet by accident and it wasn’t a big fall it should be fine, but if you constantly drop your helmet we advise you to change it. If you used your helmet a few times over 2 years ago, you should also change your helmet. Due to humidity and bugs, your helmet can be compromised.

Where should you store your helmet?

Every time that you come home after a ride, you should leave your helmet in a clean space with an ambient temperature. Leaving it on sheds sometimes isn’t the best option due to climate changes and bug contamination. If you can store it inside your house it’s recommended.

To conclude, helmets are really important and they should never be questioned if you need to wear them or not. You need it, all the time. But there are many other types of protection that you should be aware of and should use such as the knee, elbow, wrist pads and gloves. Please keep yourselves safe and see you next week!
